Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has a basic knowledge of mathematics providing the solution of classical and modern problems in the biological sciences. He knows the basics notions of mathematical analysis, algebra, probability and statistics.

Course contents

  1. Numbers and their properties. Elementary functions.

  2. Differential calculus: limits, derivatives, extrema of a function, convexity, and qualitative analysis of functions.

  3. Integral calculus: definitions and properties of the integral, integration techniques (integration by parts and substitution), and improper integrals.

  4. Differential equations.

  5. Fundamentals of discrete and continuous probability.

  6. Fundamentals of descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, and statistical hypothesis testing.

Teaching methods

Frontal Lectures: Mathematical concepts are introduced through examples inspired by real-world natural phenomena. Some lectures are supported by computer-based demonstrations and visualizations.

Weekly exercise sessions complement the lectures and reinforce students' understanding of the material.

Assessment methods

Assessment consists of a written examination including both problem-solving exercises and theoretical questions.
