99628 - Construction of Urban and Metropolitan Roads

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Building Construction Engineering (cod. 6623)

Learning outcomes

The Construction of Urban and Metropolitan Roads Course considers the topic of the infrastructures for urban and metropolitan mobility. Starting from the evolution of road infrastructures, the student will learn the basic elements and fundamentals for the design of modern paved surfaces in urban areas, with a specific focus on those for vulnerable users. Aspects related to the organization, design and construction operations of spaces and road pavements in urban area will be discussed together with their maintenance strategies. At the end of the course, students will be able to know the main design and construction principles of urban road pavements, including novel technologies and sustainable materials. A specific focus will be given to systems, design solutions and applications to reduce the impacts and externalities of road pavements on the surrounding environment.

Course contents

The Course of Construction of Urban and Metropolitan Roads is focused on the transportation infrastructures in urban and metropolitan areas. Starting from the genesis of the road, the development of the road infrastructures in terms of design criteria, materials and technologies will be discussed. The following main topics will be addressed:

  • Integration of Road infrastructures in urban and metropolitan areas;
  • Design criteria and management of intersections and crossroads in urban area;
  • Design of road infrastructures for public transportations and parking areas;
  • Road infrastructures for vulnerable users;
  • Road paving project in urban areas and their maintenance;
  • Pavement engineering materials and their characterization;
  • Design methods and tools for road structures.

Readings/Bibliography

Presentations available on Virtuale or provided by the lecturer. A number of textbooks and papers will be mentioned during the lectures.

Teaching methods

In person lectures. Design work in groups of 3-4 students.

Assessment methods

The assessment of the learning outcomes is made through a final exam, which ascertains the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills. The submission of the design work is mandatory to attend the exam.

Teaching tools

Students can download the lecture notes from the Virtuale webpage. These are slides with specific notes and comment. A lab visit will be organized to show pavement materials and their characterization.
