Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will: - be familiar with the debate on citizenship, its various dimensions, and the factors that drive processes of socio-political inclusion and exclusion; - possess the basic concepts necessary for studying the welfare state and the various forms it has taken over time in the West; - be knowledgeable about the main theories and research in the field of deviance, be familiar with the literature and empirical studies on total institutions and the social construction of deviance and stigma, and be able to identify the dynamics of exclusion and discrimination generated by these processes.
Course contents
The course provides the interpretive tools to critically reflect on the concept of citizenship in contemporary democracies. Starting from the framework developed in the 20th century by T. Marshall (civil, political, and social rights), students are guided through the distinction between citizenship as a legal status and citizenship as a concrete practice, focusing on the conditions that make that status effectively viable.
The tension between formal equality and substantive inequality serves as the analytical key through which the course examines the individual dimensions of citizenship—economic, socio-political, and territorial—leading up to the most radical forms of rights limitations within institutions of control, and concluding with active citizenship practices experimented with by marginalized groups.

Teaching methods
Face-to-face (online) lessons based of presentations of slides and multimedial texts. In addition to conventional teaching, classroom activities will be carried out aimed at promoting, among students, the skills of in-depth study, autonomous and critical discussion, self-reflection through mutual comparison, and scientific writing. The main innovative activities planned within the teaching are: shared lectures with colleagues/colleagues from other disciplines; production of short written texts (individual or in small groups) on topics solicited by the teacher and presented in the classroom; in-person and/or distance seminars; discussion with professional figures involved in social work activities; screenings of audiovisual materials preceded and/or followed by discussion
