Learning outcomes

After completing this unit the student will have gained competencies in the methodologies required to complete a project in experimental research

Course contents

The course consists of practical activities carried out within one of the research laboratories of Industrial Chemistry, Chemistry, or Physics Departments of the University of Bologna. Students are required to choose a laboratory on the basis of their interests and the research activities available. Through direct participation in experimental work related to a specific research topic, students will acquire practical experience in selected experimental areas and become familiar with the corresponding methods, instruments, and approaches. The course is designed to develop hands-on skills and to provide a clearer understanding of how an experimental research project is planned and conducted in practice, from the selection of appropriate methodologies to the organization of laboratory work. The course is completed by the preparation of a written report, in which students are expected to describe the activities carried out and to demonstrate the knowledge, practical skills, and methodological understanding acquired during the laboratory experience.

No single bibliography is prescribed: bibliographic and methodological references are identified according to the assigned project/case study.

Teaching methods

Practical activities in a laboratory or research group. Students choose among different laboratories and projects available at the University of Bologna; for practical activities, safety training is required according to University procedures.

 

 

As the course concerns only practicals, all students must attend Module 1, 2 [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas] online, while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of the degree programme.

Assessment methods

For learning assessment purposes, limited, declared and non-substantial use of AI is permitted for support activities, such as summarising or rephrasing. Substantial use of AI to complete parts of the examination is not allowed.

Assessment shall verify the methodological competences acquired during the experimental or computational project.
