from Sep 22, 2026 to Oct 20, 2026
Learning outcomes
The aim of the workshop is to study the techniques for recognizing a text (such as its literary genre, target audience, market potential, and so on), as well as its potential for development through editorial and editorial review work. We will investigate the changes in the scientific publishing market and the editorial implications of open access publications. Practical exercises on the analysis and editorial review of a text are also included in the workshop.
At the end of the workshop, the student: - is able to manage the main tools of an editor; - knows the editorial process, from the evaluation of a text to its publication; - is able to orient him or herself in the editorial dynamics of online and open access publications.
Course contents
The workshop is organized into five four-hour meetings devoted to several aspects of editorial and publishing work:
- the work of the editorial office: from typescript to print
editorial work - academic journals, digital publishing, open science/open access
- promotion, social media communication, and publishing marketing
- how a publishing house is organized: between business and cultural enterprise.
Alongside the workshop, a number of meetings will be organized with editors from the publishing house Il Mulino in Bologna, giving students the opportunity to come into contact with professionals from the publishing world with a view to career orientation.
Readings/Bibliography
R. Cicala, I meccanismi dell'editoria. Il mondo dei libri dalla carta all'intelligenza artificiale, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2025 (seconda edizione).
Teaching methods
Each of the five meetings that make up the workshop will be organized into two parts: a theoretical component devoted to the functioning of a publishing house and to the various professional roles within it, and a practical component consisting of exercises based on the theoretical content introduced, such as how to design a launch campaign for a book and through which tools and platforms, how to work on a typescript, text-editing exercises, and so on.
Assessment methods
In order to be assessed, attendance at the workshop is mandatory, and students’ attendance will be recorded. Final eligibility/pass assessment is linked to active participation in class and to the work completed during the weekly practical exercises.
