Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing tools regarding the nonlinear structural analysis for both geometric and material non linearities

Course contents

The course introduces students to nonlinear structural modeling through a theoretical and applied approach based on the use of OpenSeesPy. After an initial section dedicated to the fundamentals of nonlinear modeling, solution algorithms, materials, finite elements, and convergence control strategies, the course addresses the nonlinear analysis of typical civil engineering structures. For each type, the main sources of nonlinearity, the most appropriate modeling strategies, the constitutive models available in OpenSeesPy, and the limitations of interpreting the results are discussed.

Teaching methods

Lectures and laboratory sessions which require the use of a laptop.

Assessment methods

Following a written test aimed at verifying the knowledge acquired, students develop, in small groups, a numerical project based on technical documents provided by professional firms, building nonlinear models, performing parametric analyses, and critically discussing the modeling choices adopted.
