Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide the tools for analyzing the dynamic stability, seakeeping, and maneuverability of the hull in relation to the main hydrodynamic, geometric, and inertial design characteristics. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to develop and implement mathematical models of varying complexity, perform numerical simulations, and critically analyze the dynamic behavior of the hull in terms of its response to commands and environmental disturbances. Furthermore, they will be able to synthesize control systems for hull stabilization and automatic navigation.
Course contents
Reference Systems and Kinematics: Fixed reference systems on the ground (NED) and attached to the yacht. Euler angles (Roll, Pitch, Yaw) and their angular velocities.
6-DoF Equations of Motion: Formulation of the cardinal equations of dynamics for rigid bodies in a marine environment (Newton-Euler equations).
Hydrodynamic and Aerodynamic Forces:
Added mass, hydrodynamic damping, hydrostatic recovery forces.
Lift and drag forces on the hull, rudder, and appendages (keel, foil).
Wind modeling and aero-hydrodynamic coupling (specific to sailing yachts).
Flight Dynamics and Planing Hulls: Peculiarities of the dynamics of high-speed planing vessels (dynamic instability, porpoising).
