Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, the essential molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the beneficial and adverse effects of the major classes of drugs and toxic agents, the main therapeutic indications and contraindications of drugs, the essential principles required to understand interindividual variability in drug response in relation to genetic and pathophysiological factors as well as drug–drug interactions, and the methods of clinical pharmacology, including pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology.
Course contents
The course covers an introduction to pharmacology; pharmacodynamics, including the definition and classification of drug receptors, mechanisms of drug–receptor interactions, major pharmacodynamic models, signal transduction pathways, and their clinical applications; pharmacokinetics, including both descriptive pharmacokinetics (drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination) and quantitative pharmacokinetics (the main parameters and principles governing drug disposition); drug–drug interactions, including their mechanisms and clinical examples; bioequivalent drugs and biosimilars; sources of variability in drug response across different stages of life; and the basic principles of pharmacogenetics.
