Learning outcomes

Knowledge and skills to be acquired. By the end of the module, students will be able to apply the knowledge they have acquired regarding technical, interpersonal and educational skills in the context of basic nursing care. They will develop methodological skills relating to care planning. The module is structured in conjunction with the clinical placement and the theoretical content.

Course contents

Practical workshops: activities carried out in small groups of students. Building on the theoretical knowledge acquired, students practise to develop technical and practical skills. The activity is led by an experienced nurse, who first demonstrates the procedure, followed by students practising on manikins or through peer-to-peer practice. The workshops on the programme are:


Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and early defibrillation (BLSD)
Suctioning from an endotracheal tube
Radial arterial blood sampling for blood gas analysis
Nursing management of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (CPAP, BPAP)
Nursing management of tracheostomy
Interpersonal skills workshops: activities carried out in small groups of students. Building on the theoretical content covered, students practise to develop communication and interpersonal skills. The activity is led by an experienced nurse, who first demonstrates the procedure before the student carries it out. The workshops on the programme are:


Nursing handover and the SBAR method (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation)
Communication with critically ill and end-of-life patients
Methodological workshops: activities carried out both in small groups of students and individually. Students carry out care planning using nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems, based on a real-life case. The workshops on the programme are:

Clinical reasoning session with care planning for a patient in a life-threatening condition
Clinical reasoning session with care planning for a patient on dialysis or a patient with an urgent medical condition

Assessment methods

A written examination comprising 30 multiple-choice questions. The questions cover material from both the practical sessions and the seminars.


The examination will be considered passed with a minimum score of 18 out of 30 and will be assessed in terms of suitability, as set out in the Degree Programme Regulations.


Students will only be permitted to sit the examination if they have met the compulsory attendance requirements for the practical sessions and seminars.
