Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to apply their knowledge and understanding, demonstrating appropriate professional judgment, in the diagnosis of labor, the use of methods and technologies for labor management and fetal well-being assessment, and the evaluation of the pathophysiology of the puerperium and its main clinical parameters.

Course contents

1. Diagnosis of Labor and Childbirth

  • Diagnosis and physiology of labor.
  • Assessment of labor progress.
  • Management of normal vaginal birth.

2. Management of Childbirth

  • Methods and technologies for labor and birth management.
  • Midwifery care during the stages of labor and childbirth.
  • Management of the third stage of labor.

3. Fetal Well-being Monitoring

  • Assessment of fetal well-being.
  • Cardiotocography (CTG) monitoring and principles of interpretation.

4. The Puerperium

  • Physiology and pathophysiology of the puerperium.
  • Assessment of the main maternal clinical parameters.
  • Recognition of the main puerperal complications.

5. Midwifery Care

  • Midwifery care for the woman and the newborn in the immediate postpartum period.
  • Health education and continuity of care.
  • Collaboration within the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on an oral examination.
