Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the integrated pharmacological approach to pain management, including the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles underlying analgesic therapy. In particular, students will be able to recognize the toxic effects of local and general anaesthetics and adjuvant drugs; apply combination pharmacotherapy and pre-anaesthetic medication; manage the pharmacological treatment of dental patients receiving drugs acting on the central nervous system, including those with psychotic disorders, depression, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease; understand the principles and selective use of antimicrobial therapy in dental patients; recognize the mechanisms underlying therapeutic failure and antimicrobial resistance; and understand the pharmacological management of medical emergencies in dental practice.
Course contents
Pharmacological management of medical emergencies in dental practice; general and local anaesthetics; pre-anaesthetic medication; and the classification, mechanisms of action, and clinical use of antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral agents.
