Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have acquired a basic understanding of molecular genetic approaches to the recombinant production of new drugs and protein engineering techniques to improve their pharmacokinetic characteristics.
Course contents
Use of microbial hosts (bacteria and yeasts) and mammalian cell lines for the production of recombinant drugs (protein hormones, fibrinolytics, coagulants, anticoagulants)
Industrial scale-up and downstream
Protein engineering approaches to improve the pharmacokinetics of recombinant drugs
Development of recombinant organisms for producing biological drugs (chimeric and humanized monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, immunotoxins)
Drug targeting using immunoproteins
Pharmacomicrobiomics
Readings/Bibliography
Slides and notes taken during the lessons are essential for exam preparation.
Teaching methods
Lectures with the support of explanatory slides.
Assessment methods
Theoretical knowledge will be verified by an oral test.
1. The exam will be administered in person, except in cases of local health or flooding conditions, in risk areas as per the new regulations, or if the student is vulnerable (an assessment will be carried out by the SLD service). Each case will be assessed individually and, if the requirements are met, the exam may be taken via the TEAMS platform.
2. Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities are recommended to contact the relevant university office in good time (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en). The Office will be responsible for proposing any adaptations to the students concerned, but these must be submitted for the teacher's approval at least 15 days in advance. The teacher will then evaluate them in relation to the course's educational objectives.
3. The use of AI is prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
