Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory the student: knows the main research methodologies in the respective field of study; acquires an in-depth knowledge of the structure and organization of an argumentative text; is able to collect and organize primary and secondary sources, and to write a bibliography; knows how to apply appropriate editorial criteria in the finalization of the text.

Course contents

This workshop provides students enrolled in the DAMS degree programme with the tools and skills needed to write a thesis in the field of musicology and ethnomusicology, as well as other types of academic writing required during their university studies, such as essays, research papers, and abstracts.

The following topics will be addressed:

• how to choose a thesis topic and how to propose it to a supervisor

• how to structure the work
• bibliographic research, with particular attention to the main online tools and databases
• the use of sources (primary, secondary, oral, archival, digital)
• research methods
• the organisation and writing of the text, including source citation rules
• how to prepare an abstract

Teaching methods

Students will be actively involved in classroom discussions and encouraged to engage with the topics covered. Depending on the topic, practical exercises may also be conducted.

Assessment methods

The workshop does not include a graded exam, but rather a pass/fail evaluation (idoneità). Attendance of at least 80% is required to be considered a regular attendee.
Active student participation is strongly encouraged, and attendance may be verified through the completion of registers and attendance sheets. Students who are unable to attend classes in person are asked to contact the instructor to agree on a written assignment and the corresponding assessment procedures.

With regard to the assessment of learning, the use of AI in the production of the written assignment is prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
