Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will:

  • Understand the specific features of the surgical approach to older patients, including frailty assessment and the development of a personalized treatment plan.
  • Understand the modifiable factors that can be optimized during the preoperative period to improve the clinical condition of geriatric patients, as well as the principles of prehabilitation.
  • Understand the therapeutic strategies and intraoperative approaches that should be adopted when performing surgery in geriatric patients.
  • Understand the key principles for preventing postoperative complications and postoperative delirium, as well as the fundamentals of postoperative recovery in older surgical patients.
  • Understand the specific aspects of discharge planning, home discharge, and the risk of institutionalization in older patients undergoing surgery.
  • Understand the main challenges and principles involved in the management of older patients requiring emergency surgery.
