Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student will have acquired, within the scope of their competencies, knowledge of anesthesiology and intensive care physiology and pathophysiology, as well as critical care medicine.

Course contents

  1. Intensive Care Unit (ICU): mission, structural, technological, and organizational requirements.

  2. Open Intensive Care Unit (Open ICU) model.

  3. Admission and discharge criteria for the critical care unit.

  4. Acute respiratory failure: from pathophysiology to management in the critical care setting; patient assessment and the main oxygen therapy devices and techniques. Mechanical ventilation.

  5. The patient with cardiorespiratory arrest: Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines.

  6. Analgesia and sedation in the critical care setting; delirium in ICU patients: from assessment to management.

  7. Introduction to disaster medicine and prehospital major incident management.

i) Acquire knowledge of the general principles of Disaster Medicine.

ii) Understand the chain of survival and emergency response.

iii) Understand the concept of the "Noria" system (patient evacuation and transport flow).

iv) Understand triage, including its different types and methodologies.

v) Develop the ability to work effectively with the other members of the emergency response team.

vi) Understand the principles of communication with the media during emergency operations.

vii) Acquire the fundamentals of collective emergency and major incident management, including:

  1. The Hospital/Medical Disaster Management system.

  2. Sustainable protocols and procedures for mass casualty incidents.

  3. Principles of managing non-conventional emergency scenarios.

viii) Introduce the philosophy and role of the disaster responder within Disaster Medicine, including:

  1. Defining the concept of a disaster.

  2. Understanding the fundamental principles of Disaster Medicine.

  3. Understanding the chain of emergency response.
