Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students will have acquired, within the scope of their training, knowledge of general microbiology, including both its fundamental principles and applied aspects. They will also have developed competence in the cellular and molecular basis of microbial pathogenicity, microorganism–host interactions, and the diagnostic and clinical aspects of microbiological and virological analyses.
Course contents
The General Microbiology Module is part of the Integrated Course in Preventive and Community Health Sciences. The syllabus outlined below refers exclusively to this specific module.

Students are expected to possess the basic knowledge acquired during secondary education. In addition, attentive participation in the lectures delivered during the first semester is recommended.
Readings/Bibliography
The material made available to students by the lecturer on the Virtuale platform is more than sufficient to successfully pass the examination for the General Microbiology Module.
Students who wish to further deepen their knowledge may consult standard Microbiology textbooks for personal study and enrichment.
Teaching methods
During the lectures, the topics included in the course syllabus will be presented and developed in depth. Ample opportunity will be provided for students to ask questions, fostering active participation and encouraging thorough discussion of the subjects covered.
Assessment methods
The examination will be held as a single assessment for the Integrated Course in Preventive and Community Health Sciences, which includes the modules of Preventive and Community Nursing, Microbiology, Hygiene, and Radiation Protection. The assessment consists of two parts: an oral examination and a written examination, scheduled a few days apart. It's mandatory to make the reservation for each part on Almaesami website.
Students must first take the oral examination covering the syllabus of the Preventive and Community Nursing module.
Only students who achieve a passing grade in the oral examination, with a minimum score of 18/30, will be eligible to sit the written examination, which will cover the syllabi of Microbiology, Hygiene, and Radiation Protection.
The written examination will be conducted in person via EOL, using the student’s own computer or tablet.
The written test will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions, distributed as follows:
- 16 questions in Hygiene,
- 16 questions in Microbiology,
- 8 questions in Radiation Protection,
thereby maintaining the appropriate weighting among the different course credits (CFU).
To pass the written examination, students must answer at least 24 questions correctly, as each correct answer is worth 0.75 points. Incorrect or unanswered questions receive 0 points.
The final grade will be calculated as a weighted average of the two examination components:
- the oral examination will account for 2/7 of the final grade;
- the written examination will account for 5/7 of the final grade.
A passing grade obtained in the oral examination will not remain valid unless the written examination is also passed during the same examination session.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) during examinations is strictly prohibited. Any use of AI tools will be considered a violation of academic integrity and will be subject to the relevant disciplinary regulations and procedures.
Students with specific learning disorders (SLD) or temporary or permanent disabilities are strongly encouraged to contact the relevant University office in a timely manner. The office will be responsible for identifying and proposing any appropriate accommodations for the students concerned. Any proposed accommodations must be submitted to the course instructor for approval at least 15 days in advance. The instructor will assess their appropriateness, taking into account the learning objectives and requirements of the course.

Slides will be available on Virtuale website. AI may be a useful tool to support individual study by facilitating further exploration of course topics, the preparation of summaries, and self-assessment activities.
