Learning outcomes
The module builds upon the knowledge of surgical anatomy and applied pathophysiology acquired during the previous years of the degree programme. At the end of the course, students will be able to recognize the main surgical diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and endocrine organs, understand the appropriate diagnostic work-up and staging, identify the indications for surgical treatment, and describe the general principles of the most common surgical procedures. Students will also be able to understand the role of the multidisciplinary approach in the management of surgical diseases and apply clinical reasoning to the assessment of patients requiring surgical treatment.
Course contents
The module covers the main surgical diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and endocrine organs. For each topic, the essential aspects of epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation, the appropriate diagnostic work-up and staging, the indications for surgical treatment, the general principles of the main surgical procedures, and the role of the multidisciplinary approach in therapeutic decision-making will be discussed. The aim is to provide students with the knowledge required for the appropriate assessment of the surgical patient and for understanding the clinical reasoning leading to surgical indication, without addressing the technical details of advanced surgical procedures.
