Course contents

Educational Objectives

The ability to produce, based on an analysis of texts and documents relating to current affairs in the French-speaking world, an original piece of work offering a critical analysis of a thematic dossier of documents, as well as to formulate a reasoned response to a specific question. The level of proficiency to be achieved is C1 of the CEFR, as demonstrated by syntax and vocabulary in line with the descriptors for that level.

Teaching methods

The course will focus on the acquisition of the following skills:

• identifying, for use appropriate to the context and the purpose of the text, the stylistic, pragmatic and syntactic markers present in the texts of the corpus compiled by the lecturer (available on Virtuale from the very first lessons);

• incorporating, during the writing phase, the practice of consulting various resources (including electronic ones) useful for writing in French.

Assessment methods

NB: In order to sit any part of the French Language and Linguistics 3 examination, students must have already taken and passed French Language and Linguistics 1 and 2.

Exam: Based on an analysis of texts and documents, students must produce an original essay offering a critical analysis of the topic addressed in the documents provided.

Duration of the exam: 4 hours.

Formative assessment (2 mid-term assessments) will be organised during the academic year (one mid-term assessment at the end of each semester), in accordance with procedures that will be explained at the start of the course.

Assessment criteria:

The following criteria will be given equal weight:

1. Organisation and structure of the text: the ability to identify the central theme, the structure of each document and the argumentative strategies employed; the ability to summarise the various positions; to reformulate the main ideas without resorting to paraphrasing; and the ability to organise the text into a cohesive, coherent and effective structure (which will be explained during the course)
2. Syntax and Vocabulary: syntax and vocabulary must comply with the requirements for the target level (C1) of the CEFR.
3. The other assessment criteria are those already laid down for DALF (C1) certifications, in particular: a) adherence to the instructions; b) cohesion and coherence of the text; c) richness of syntactic and lexical repertoire, including the ability to rephrase with ease; d) accuracy and consistency of spelling and grammar; e) morphosyntactic appropriateness of the text; f) appropriateness of the text in relation to the communicative situation.

The use of a monolingual French dictionary is permitted. Students are encouraged to use it throughout the course.
