Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student:

• has a basic understanding of the organization of the various organs and systems of the human body;
• has knowledge of the structure of the Central Nervous System.

Course contents

Introduction to the Study of Anatomy (microscopic and macroscopic anatomy; levels of organization; organs and systems)

General description of Tissues. Definition and classification. Histological organization and morpho-functional relationships of epithelial, connective and muscular tissues.

Nervous Tissue: general organization, types of neurons and their morphology. Neuroglia. The synapse.

Cardiovascular System: Heart and pericardium; pulmonary and systemic circulation; coronary arteries; overview of the course of the aorta and venae cavae; overview of fetal circulation.

Overview of the following systems and apparatuses: musculoskeletal system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, endocrine system.

Neuroanatomy: general organization of the nervous system. The meninges and the ventricular system.

• Central Nervous System: spinal cord; brainstem; cerebellum; diencephalon; telencephalon; main sensory and motor pathways.
• Peripheral Nervous System: general overview of the cranial nerves and spinal nerves.
• Autonomic Nervous System: organization of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.

Teaching methods

Teaching activities will consist of lectures supported by slides and anatomical models. The teaching materials used to support the lectures will be made available on the Virtuale platform.

Assessment methods

The examination assessing the knowledge and skills acquired during the course is conducted in written form. It consists of one open-ended question and nine multiple-choice questions.

The final grade is based on the score obtained in the open-ended question (0–1 point: insufficient knowledge; 2–3 points: sufficient knowledge; 4 points: satisfactory knowledge; 5 points: comprehensive knowledge of the selected topic), plus the scores obtained in the multiple-choice questions (3 points for each correct answer).

The recorded grade for the Integrated Course Basic and Applied Biological Sciences of Humans I corresponds to the mathematical average of the grades obtained in Biology and Human Anatomy.

**Students with learning disorders and temporary or permanent disabilities are encouraged to contact the dedicated office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students) as soon as possible in order to agree on appropriate compensatory adjustments. The request must be submitted  in advance (at least 15 days before the examination date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the measures in accordance with the learning objectives.
