94165 - Topics in Mathematical Methods and Models in Theoretical Physics

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Docente: Ling Lin
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: PHYS-02/A
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Physics (cod. 9244)

Learning outcomes

The course introduces students to topics and tools of modern theoretical physics. At the end of the course, students will be able to deal with appropriate mathematical methods and apply theoretical models to the description of some among the most significative problems of physics

Course contents

1. Electromagnetism as a field theory

2. Mathematical foundations of Special Relativity

3. Tensor formalism and differential forms

4. Relativistic field theories and covariant formulation of electromagnetism

5. Continuous symmetries and their infinitesimal generators

6. Representation theory of the rotation group

Students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) or temporary/permanent disabilities are advised to contact the University Office responsible in a timely manner (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en). The office will be responsible for proposing any necessary accommodations to the students concerned. These accommodations must be submitted to the instructor for approval at least 15 days in advance, and will be evaluated in light of the learning objectives of the course
