70087 - Detaildesign for Energy Efficiency

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 9265)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will acquire knowledge regarding the theoretical principles, methodologies, and operational criteria used to define and organize constructive, technological, and structural solutions up to the executive design stage. In particular, students will be able to apply this knowledge to the analysis and interpretation of architectural projects.

Course contents

The integrated course PROGETTAZIONE ESECUTIVA DELL'ARCHITETTURA PER L'EFFICIENZA ENERGETICA (C.I.) consists of two modules: "Progettazione Esecutiva dell'architettura" (4 CFU) e "Fisica tecnica Ambientale II" (4 CFU).

Regarding the Progettazione Esecutiva dell'architettura module, one of the main objectives is to define a set of theoretical and operational references that characterize the various stages of the construction process. Focus is placed on the tools through which architects manage and monitor consistency between architectural choices and the technical solutions used to implement them.

The analysis of the entire building process (implementation and management) and the definition of its control tools—through the examination of the design phases (schematic design, detailed design, executive design, operational developments)—are based on the awareness that project management strategies aim to integrate design, production, and organization functions.

The study of the relationship between executive design stages and construction procedures consists of analyzing a design workflow aimed at producing the graphic and descriptive documentation required to translate the concept into construction site activities. Construction site organization is analyzed in relation to the cost-time-quality triad, while also examining how other factors contribute to operational choices aimed at optimizing the process and its outcomes.

The topics developed throughout the course address analysis methodologies, control tools, and operational procedures that determine the feasibility of architectural projects. Specifically, depth will be given to construction technologies, the organization of implementation phases, regulatory constraints, and innovative trends. The specific disciplinary area of the course—Architectural Technology—defines the scale of analysis and detail applied to design practice. In practice, this will result in a design exercise for a building, including a summary spec sheet, plan-elevation-section drawings, and key executive construction details.

Specific Areas of Study

Foundational elements of executive design include: principles and methodologies for defining project strategies; control and management of environmental transformation processes; development and achievement of energy-efficient design approaches; and the identification and definition of methods and tools for guiding and controlling the building process.

Teaching methods

Course Structure and Teaching Methods

Classes will be held once a week on Thursdays.

Sessions will be dedicated to lectures and theoretical presentations, discussions on the ongoing course assignment, as well as participation in lectures and debates organized as part of the course activities.

Due to the nature of the activities and the teaching methods adopted, attendance at this course requires all students to have previously completed Modules 1 and 2 of the online safety training for study environments (https://elearning-sicurezza.unibo.it/ ).

Students with SLD or Disabilities:

Students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) or temporary/permanent disabilities are strongly advised to contact the relevant University office in advance (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en). The office will propose any suitable accommodations, which must be submitted for approval to the lecturer at least 15 days in advance. The lecturer will assess their appropriateness in relation to the learning outcomes of the course.

Assessment methods

The final examination aims to evaluate the achievement of the learning outcomes and the competencies acquired by the student.

The Integrated Course in PROGETTAZIONE ESECUTIVA DELL'ARCHITETTURA PER L'EFFICIENZA ENERGETICA (C.I.) consists of two modules: "Progettazione Esecutiva dell'architettura" (4 CFU) e "Fisica tecnica Ambientale II" (4 CFU).

The final exam is a single, unified examination.

Coordination between the two modules of the integrated course involves:

  • Definition of a joint design exercise common to both modules (sharing both the case study and the working group);

  • The technical construction details from the Executive Architectural Design module will be subject to evaluation, calculation, and regulatory compliance verification within the Environmental Building Physics II module.

PROGETTAZIONE ESECUTIVA MODULE

Access to the exam is subject to the progress made on the project during tutorials/reviews. The individual exam includes a theoretical assessment on the topics covered during lectures and the discussion of the design materials produced during the course.

The required deliverables to be submitted on the day of the exam for the developed project include:

  • Analysis sheets (A3 format);

  • No. 2 boards (A1 format);

  • Reduced copy of the boards (A3 format);

  • Organized collection of Technical Product Data Sheets (STP);

  • Submission via email of PDF files containing the deliverables and the presentations given during the academic year.

Submitting the boards is mandatory in order to sit for the exam.

The evaluation of the design project and the oral exam on the theoretical part will take place as a single assessment divided into two parts:

  1. Evaluation of the final presentation of GRAPHIC DELIVERABLES and studies carried out during the year. Candidates must demonstrate their preparation by illustrating and discussing their project;

  2. Evaluation of the THEORETICAL PART, verifying the knowledge of the topics covered in lectures, with reference to the recommended textbooks and supplementary documents.

Evaluation criteria for GRAPHIC DELIVERABLES:

  • Completeness of the contents on the board: 0 to 10 points;

  • Knowledge of the technologies represented in the deliverables: 0 to 10 points;

  • Quality and clarity of graphic execution: 0 to 10 points.

Evaluation criteria for the THEORETICAL PART:

  • Presentation skills: 0 to 5 points;

  • Preparation on the topics covered: 0 to 15 points;

  • Reasoning capacity and ability to connect the topics covered: 0 to 10 points.

The grade for the Executive Architectural Design module is the average of the scores obtained in the graphic deliverables and the oral exam.

Fisica tecnica Ambientale II MODULE

The assessment method includes:

  1. Evaluation of a GRAPHIC DELIVERABLE related to the Case Study of the Executive Architectural Design Module (A1 landscape format), including: thermophysical data of building enclosures, Glaser diagram for at least one opaque enclosure, and the layout and schematic diagram of the HVAC system. The deliverable must be submitted at the end of the course on a date proposed by students and agreed upon with the lecturer. No late submissions will be accepted, except in specific and exceptional circumstances.

  2. An ORAL INTERVIEW with the lecturer, held simultaneously with the final exam. The test initially requires a written response (formulas, diagrams, etc.), followed immediately by a discussion with the lecturer to clarify and expand upon the written answers.

Evaluation criteria for the GRAPHIC DELIVERABLE:

  • Contents of the board, graphic execution, and completeness: 0 to 10 points;

  • Verification of entered data and thermophysical calculations (u-value/transmittance and Glaser diagram): 0 to 10 points;

  • Absence of errors in system schematics and layout: 0 to 10 points.

Evaluation criteria for the ORAL INTERVIEW:

  • Presentation skills: 0 to 5 points;

  • Preparation on the topics listed in the syllabus and covered by the question: 0 to 15 points;

  • Relevance of answers to clarification requests: 0 to 10 points.

The grade for the Environmental Building Physics II module is the average of the scores obtained in the graphic deliverable and the oral interview.

FINAL GRADE

The final grade is the average of the marks obtained in the Executive Architectural Design module and the Environmental Building Physics II module.

Each student's final grade will be communicated at the end of the exam session.
