Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student: has acquired basic knowledge of health determinants, prevention, health education; knows the fundamental means to prevent the main infectious and non-infectious diseases and to promote the childhood wellbeing in community pre-school services.

Course contents

Health and first 1000 days of life:

 concept of health, determinants of early childhood health; surveillance system for health determinants in children  

Health promotion in nursery services:

health education, educators role, parenting support, healthy childhood routines.

Infectious diseases and parasitic diseases prevention:

microorganisms, transmission modalities; vaccine prophylaxis, schedule for vaccines in newborns; isolation, disinfection, sterilization, disinfestation; most important childhood infectious diseases (transmitted through respiratory secretions, through oro-fecal way); parasitic diseases (pediculosis, oxyuriasis).

Prevention and control measures in nursery services: behaviour of educators, child hygiene, exclusion from and readmission to communities.

Nutrition hygiene and food safety:

main nutrients, indications for correct nutrition. Childhood nutrition: breastfeeding, weaning, feeding in childcare services, special diets; food safety, foodborne diseasea, methods of conservation and food control. 

Life style and prevention:

childhood obesity prevention; physical activity; regular sleep; Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) prevention

Teaching methods

Frontal lectures, video, questioning (wooclap), seminars.

 

Lectures are given in Italian.

 

 

Assessment methods

Criteria to assess Hygiene exam will be:

- clarity in the presentation of the contents;
- ability to link the main issues;
- critical analysis of the repercussions of the topics studied within community pre-school services and for the training of educator professionalism.

written examination consisting of 25 “closed-answer” questions with only one correct answer (one point for each correct answer) and of one “open” question. The open question will evaluate the student's level of detailed knowledge and use of appropriate language. The “open” question will be evaluated in a range between 0 (insufficient) and 6 (excellent).

oral examination: students who fail the written examination or refuse the grade repeat the examination orally

Students with DSA or disabilities: it is recommended that they contact the responsible University office (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students) as soon as possible. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, considering the teaching objectives.

ERASMUS STUDENT: the learning assessment method is agreed with the lecturer. The exam will take place in Italian. Bibliography is in italian language.

The final vote will be expressed in thirtieths (30/30).

The maximum possible score is 30, the minimum to pass is 18.

To support the exam registration is required through Bulletin Board, in compliance with mandatory deadlines. Those who failed to register for technical issues by the due date, shall communicate promptly (and in any case before the formal closure of the registration lists) the problem to the academic office. The teacher's right to admit or not the student to the examination.

The use of AI is prohibited in the context of learning assessment. Any use of artificial intelligence constitutes a violation of academic integrity.
