Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: understand the fundamental principles of clinical pharmacology.
Know the main drug classes relevant to podiatry practice.
Identify adverse effects and potential drug interactions.

Course contents

Basic Principles of Pharmacology

  • Introduction to clinical pharmacology
  • Pharmacokinetics: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination
  • Pharmacodynamics: mechanisms of drug action
  • Adverse drug reactions and drug interactions

Drugs for Pain and Inflammation Management 

  • Analgesics
  • Anti-inflammatory therapies (NSAIDs and corticosteroids)
  • Adverse effects and contraindications

Antibiotics and antifungal agents for Foot Infection Management

  • Principles of antimicrobial therapy
  • Antibiotics commonly used for skin and soft tissue infections
  • Diabetic foot infections
  • Antimicrobial stewardship and antibiotic resistance
  • Antiseptics and advanced wound care products

Assessment methods

Questionnaire consisting of 31 questions with 4 possible answers of which only one is correct. The questions concern the whole program of the course.

Students have 20 minutes for the written exam. The use of supporting materials such as textbooks, notes, or computer media is not permitted during the exam. The maximum score achievable for providing all correct and complete answers is therefore 30 cum laude. A minimum score of 18/30 is considered a pass.
