Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will possess basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry. Specifically, they will be able to study the composition, structure, and reactivity of matter. Students will also possess a basic understanding of the chemistry of inorganic pigments.

Course contents

Introduction to the study of Chemistry. Properties of matter. Atomic structure. Elements and compounds. The periodic system. Chemical bond. Classification and nomenclature of inorganic compounds. Aqueous solutions. Chemical reactions and stoichiometry. The chemical equilibrium. pH, acids and bases. Solubility. Introduction to the chemistry of inorganic pigments.
The course also includes four laboratory exercises: two concern the observation and understanding of chemical reactions; two consist in the synthesis of inorganic pigments. In addition to the specific contents, these exercises allow the student to acquire for the first time a certain dexterity and familiarity with simple chemical laboratory equipment, and to examine the pictograms and safety data sheets that accompany the chemical products.

Readings/Bibliography

The topics covered can be found in any recent university textbook on General Chemistry. We particularly recommend Palmisano and Schiavello's "ELEMENTI DI CHIMICA" (ELEMENTS OF CHEMISTRY), EDISES. Teaching materials are provided via username and password at VIRTUALE - Online Teaching Support - University of Bologna.

Teaching methods

The course consists of 6 credits, including 5 credits of lectures and numerical exercises, and 1 credit of practical laboratory exercises. Numerical exercises and laboratory experiments are useful for developing applied and practical skills that complement the theoretical knowledge acquired during lectures.
Due to the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, attendance at this training activity requires all students to complete Modules 1 and 2 via e-learning [https://site.unibo.it/tutela-promozione-salute-sicurezza/it/corsi-di-formazione/formazione-obbligatoria-su-sicurezza-e-salute-per-svolgimento-di-tirocinio-tesi-laboratorio] and participate in Module 3, a specific training course on health and safety in the workplace. Information on the dates and attendance methods for Module 3 can be found in the dedicated section of the program website.

Assessment methods

Learning assessment is achieved through the final exam, which verifies the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills through an oral examination. During the exam, students are free to consult the Periodic Table. The first question of the oral exam consists of a stoichiometry exercise designed to test knowledge of the nomenclature of inorganic compounds and the meaning of chemical reactions, essential requirements for passing the exam. Subsequent questions are designed to test the student's acquisition of basic knowledge of general chemistry and the chemical properties of elements and compounds.
