Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to apply knowledge and understanding in the fields of orthopedics/traumatology, rheumatology, and neurology across the various stages of life. They are capable of employing clinical reasoning aimed at problem-solving while continuously seeking opportunities for self-directed learning.

Course contents

The workshop consists of three modules, each lasting 20 hours.

Module 1: Orthopedic-traumatological workshop – Instructor: Federica Montanari

Module 2: Neurological workshop – Instructor: Silvia Faenza

Module 3: Pediatric workshop – Instructor: Chiara Ricciotti

The syllabus for each module is as follows:

- Collecting physiological and pathological patient history relevant to physiotherapy.

- Performing the physical physiotherapy assessment.

- Conducting clinical reasoning.

- Identifying therapeutic goals and strategies based on the individual's needs.

- Monitoring goal achievement, including during the course of treatment.

Presentation of clinical cases (practical demonstration of assessment, identification of the primary problem, therapeutic goals, and physiotherapy treatment) via video or in-class presentation featuring a person with an orthopedic-traumatological or neurological condition.

Teaching methods

Interactive lessons comprising an initial lecture-based component followed by an experiential phase involving discussion between the instructor and students during the assessment and treatment of real or simulated clinical cases—specifically, individuals with conditions requiring physiotherapy.

Given the nature of the activities and teaching methods employed, attendance at this training course requires all students to complete Modules 1 and 2 via e-learning and to participate in the third module, which provides specific training on health and safety in study and clinical placement environments.

Assessment methods

Passing the exam results in a "Pass" (suitability) grade, determined by a practical or simulated assessment involving clinical reasoning based on a case study.

The end-of-course practical assessment aims to evaluate the achievement of the main learning objectives:

- Ability to effectively and comprehensively gather a clinical history relevant to physiotherapy;

- Ability to identify and assess present clinical signs and symptoms;

- Ability to determine therapeutic goals;

- Ability to conduct a treatment session.
