D0651 - THE CONCEPT OF LIMIT

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Moduli: Giovanna Citti (Modulo 1) Nicola Arcozzi (Modulo 2) Giovanni Eugenio Comi (Modulo 3)
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 1); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 2); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 3)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Mathematics (cod. 8010)

Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce the first fundamental concepts of mathematical analysis underlying the notion of limits. At the end of the course, students will have learned how to express themselves fluently in the formal language of mathematics and how to apply this knowledge to the solution of simple practical problems arising in pure and applied sciences.

Course contents

  • Natural numbers
  • The principle of induction
  • Limits of sequences: definition and main properties
  • Sequences defined recursively
  • Real numbers Supremum and infimum
  • Limits of functions of one real variable

Teaching methods

The teaching methods include formal lectures, guided practical sessions, weekly meetings with the lecturers, and components of independent study.
