Learning outcomes

"Knowledge of the main transplant approaches in hematology, and of their clinical and management pathways. Laboratory and clinical management of cellular components. Clinical assessment of patients eligible for stem cell transplantation procedures for hematologic and non-hematologic diseases (including autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis)."

Course contents

The first module focuses on laboratory aspects of Immunohematology (the ABO system and minor blood groups) and on the methods for preparing and collecting the different blood components (cellular and plasma-based). It will also cover in detail both the diagnostic aspects and the clinical management of transfusion reactions, as well as topics related to Patient Blood Management — that is, how to optimize the surgical pathway of patients undergoing operations associated with significant blood loss, in order to prevent anemia and reduce the need for blood transfusions.

Finally, topics related to the collection and preparation of cellular products for transplantation purposes will be addressed, including cryopreservation and the techniques of freezing and thawing cellular products.

The second module focuses on the non-hematologic indications for stem cell transplantation — that is, the international criteria used to assess the eligibility of patients with multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, systemic vasculitis, and other autoimmune diseases for autologous transplantation.

The third module, led by Dr. Giovanni Marconi, will mainly cover in-depth studies on myelomas, lymphomas, and leukemias. Relevant clinical cases will be used to explore the diagnostic pathway based on molecular biology and histologic and cytogenetic characterization, with a specific focus on targeted therapy for oncohematologic diseases.
