Learning outcomes
At the end of the seminar, students will acquire some fundamental legal concepts, enabling them to follow the first-year teachings of the degree programs in the Department of Legal Studies with adequate awareness; they will have a basic knowledge of private and public law.
Course contents
Origin and functions of law in society - Law and conflict; social groups and interests; legal rules and other regulatory systems (morals, religion, customs); coercive nature of law.
Legal system and Constitution - Concept of legal system; principles, values and sources; Constitution and constitutional system; system of sources.
Sources of law and interpretation - Hierarchy and competence of sources; role of the interpreter; criteria for interpretation and legal argumentation; consistency and completeness of the system.
Subjects of law and subjective legal situations - Legal capacity and capacity to act; natural persons and legal persons; absolute and relative rights and legitimate interests; responsibilities and duties; an overview of judicial protection.
Elements of private law - Obligations; contracts in general.
Public law and public administration - Public administration and administrative law. Public interests and constraints on objectives. Principles of administrative action. Acts and measures.
Teaching methods
Lectures, analysis of case law, guided exercises, small group activities.
Assessment methods
The final assessment consists of a written test comprising 30 multiple-choice questions on the topics covered during the seminar. The test is considered passed with at least 18 correct answers out of 30.
Teaching tools
During the course, teaching and supplementary materials will be provided and PowerPoint presentations will be used for teaching purposes.
