Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student has acquired the ability to apply knowledge and understanding related to childbirth, the postpartum period, the puerperium, and the welcoming of the newborn. The student is able to identify potentially pathological situations through midwifery practice and the use of specific technologies. The student is able to clinically assess the newborn, identifying clinical conditions at risk. The student promotes mother–infant bonding and supports breastfeeding. The student is responsible for providing initial neonatal care.

Course contents

To acquire the knowledge necessary to support women throughout the entire childbirth pathway, including the delicate processes of the prodromal phase, labour, and birth. To be able to practice the “art of midwifery,” recognizing the central role of the woman during labour, birth, and the puerperium, while promoting overall health and maternal–neonatal well-being.

Furthermore, the student must be familiar with care needs in order to adequately provide initial neonatal care and ensure the mother–newborn relationship, promoting and supporting skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding. Particular emphasis is placed on fostering a family-centred approach to childbirth, with emotional support during labour and birth. The student should understand and implement all procedures and behaviours that promote and encourage the establishment of the mother–newborn relationship, as well as the meaning and importance of welcoming the newborn by the parental couple, in line with the UNICEF “Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative,” which aims to ensure the implementation in hospitals of evidence-based procedures and organizational models that support, promote, and protect breastfeeding.

To understand the dynamic, mechanical, and plastic phenomena of physiological labour.

To understand the pathophysiology of pain during the prodromal phase and labour, both in the woman and the fetus, and to be able to promote and apply all non-pharmacological methods for pain management during labour.

To ensure midwifery care that is always based on scientific evidence (Evidence-Based Medicine, EBM).

Midwifery care plans in the postpartum period and puerperium focused on:

Correct skin-to-skin practice

The importance of caregiving and love in the development of the infant’s brain

Strengthening the mother’s confidence in herself and in her own abilities

Early attachment of the infant to the breast; “Breastfeeding: the Ten Steps of UNICEF–WHO for Baby-Friendly Hospitals”; biology of lactation, clinical management of lactation, and hygiene standards

Proper completion of midwifery and paediatric medical records, including the partogram, CeDAP (Certificate of Assistance at Delivery), and birth certificate documentation.
