Learning outcomes

He/she knows the processes that, starting from anatomy, led to the birth of Veterinary Medicine in Europe and, in particular, in Italy.

Course contents

This teaching is a component of the Integrated Course “Soft Skills”.

The course will cover the fundamental steps that led to the birth and development of Veterinary Medicine starting from anatomy.

Specifically, the course will cover the following topics:

- Definitions of "animal doctor" in time (marescalco, mulomedico, ippiatra, zooiatra, veterinarian) (15 min);

- Theological and divinatory veterinary medicine in the Ancient world (45 min);

- The dogmatic veterinary medicine of the Greeks (1 hr);

- The empirical veterinary medicine of the Romans (1 hr);

- Scholastic and monastic veterinary medicine in the Middle Ages (1 hr);

- The major anatomical discoveries on animals of the Renaissance (2 hrs);

- The scientific veterinary medicine of the age of Enlightenment (2 hrs);

- The birth of veterinary schools (1 hr);

- Anatomical iconography through the centuries (1 hr).

Teaching methods

Lectures.

A hands-on laboratory to be conducted in groups on ancient material of the G.B. Ercolani Veterinary Library and/or the Domestic Animal Anatomy Collection. The aim is to promote active learning on the part of the student and to develop his or her critical sense.

Assessment methods

Integrated course exam

This course unit is part of the Integrated Course (I.C.) B09090 -SOFT SKILLS. The examination will be carried out for the entire I.C. and will include all the modules part of the I.C. In order to pass the exam, the student will need to achieve the sufficiency threshold (approx. 60%, i.e., 18/30) in each of the course units. If one or more thresholds are not met, the Candidate will need to repeat the whole exam.

Exam structure and evaluation for the course unit B9261 - FONDAMENTI DI ANATOMIA VETERINARIA PER LO SVILUPPO DELLE DISCIPLINE VETERINARIE

The exam will be structures a follows:

  • five Multiple Choice (MC) questions with one correct answer over four possible choices (each correct answer is worth 6 points).
  • Performing an activity proposed by the teacher during lectures may lead to honors if the total score for all modules is 30.
