Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students know the main physical-chemical principles governing the cell processes and the basics of (bio)statistics and data analysis used in treating experimental data and tackle biological intrinsic variability. The students will be able to deal with calculation and experimental tools, physical-chemical methods and approaches, for the quantitative description of cellular processes.

Teaching methods
The course consists in 32 hours of lectures. The course also comprises 12 hours of numerical exercises and 15 hours of laboratory practice.
As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas] online, while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class or on Microsoft Teams according to the modality chosen by the teacher. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree program.
Assessment methods
The assessment consists of a written exam. During the exam, students will be required to:
i) solve 2 or 3 numerical exercises in biostatistics, similar to those completed during the course (biostatistics section);
ii) answer 20 multiple-choice questions on the theoretical part of the course;
iii) answer two open-ended questions on the theoretical part of the course.
The written exam will last 3 hours. The final grade will be assigned as follows:
- one-third based on the accuracy of the biostatistics exercises,
- one-third based on the number of correct answers to the multiple-choice questions (no penalties will be applied for incorrect answers),
- one-third based on the quality of the open-ended responses, specifically evaluating the student’s ability to analyze and explore the proposed topic, as well as their clarity of expression and language accuracy.
Participation in the laboratory will also be assessed through a written report on the activities carried out.
Students have the right to reject the proposed positive grade once (in accordance with the University Teaching Regulations, ART.16, paragraph 5).
Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en ) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
Students recognized as “working students”: please consult the dedicated website (https://www.unibo.it/en/study/guide-to-choosing-your-programme/balancing-study-and-work ) to apply for this status and to learn about the available measures.
