WHO IS IT FOR: Anyone interested in acquiring skills in digital text, and in particular those enrolled in Master's degree programmes LM 14 and 15.
WHEN: The workshop will be intensive and will take place from 9 FEBRUARY to 12 MARCH.
HOW TO REGISTER: To register, send an email with your CV (in European format, indicating the exams taken and grades; preference will be given to grades obtained in L FIL LET 10 and 13 exams) to paola.italia@unibo.it. Please notify us of your registration before adding the course to your study plan, so that we can check the availability of remaining places.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: Given the workshop nature of the course, 30 participants will be selected from among the candidates.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED
The workshop aims to provide basic tools for understanding the mechanisms of digital text production, focusing on standard markup languages for text encoding, especially XML/TEI, with attention to the various possible levels of markup and, in particular, the philological level.
CONTENTS
The state of the art in digital editions and archives of literary texts will be presented, with particular reference to the field of Digital Scholarly Editions, in order to reflect on how literary texts are created, maintained and used in a digital environment. An analysis will therefore be carried out of the most widely represented ecdotic paradigms to date and the future prospects of digital textuality, with particular attention to the philological and critical aspects.
The concept of digital edition will be addressed in opposition to that of digitisation, exploring the issues of coding and markup languages, with a specific focus on the XML standard and the TEI vocabulary. XML/TEI coding of a literary text (Leopardi's Zibaldone) will also be proposed, through group exercises and independent work supervised by the teaching tutor. Finally, students will design a simple theoretical coding model, either complementary or alternative to the one presented in class.
Course contents
PROGRAMME
The course consists of 15 hours of lectures with exercises (HTML and XML/TEI coding) and 15 hours of independent coding work.
The first part of the course will be devoted to a theoretical introduction to the topics listed below, while the second part will allow students to put the knowledge and skills acquired into practice by designing a coding model and producing a valid and well-formed XML/TEI file of a literary or critical text.
TOPICS
1. Paper and digital texts, from text to hypertext; 2. Paper and digital editions; 3. Case studies of digital editions: poetry and prose; 4. Case studies of digital editions: letters and comments; 5. The concept of encoding, markup languages (HTML, SGML, XML), DTD and XML; 6. The TEI vocabulary and the different possible levels of encoding: 7. The TEI vocabulary and the encoding of the apparatus; 8. Assignment and analysis of texts; 9-15. Markup exercises.
CERTIFICATE
Upon passing the final exam (marking of a text/commentary), students will receive a certificate of attendance proving their participation in the workshop and the achievement of 6 CFU credits for Activity F.
