Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Docente: Stefano Fedi
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: BIO/19
  • Language: Italian
  • Moduli: Stefano Fedi (Modulo 1) Enrico Dinelli (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Marine Biology (cod. 6772)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has gained knowledge of the main energy metabolisms of marine microorganisms and the way they take part in the biogeochemical cycles. Furthermore, the student has reached a good knowledge of the role microorganisms play in the structuring of marine environments, particularly idrothermal vents and sediments.

Course contents

Introduction to marine microbiology. Microbial biodiversity: genetics, genomics, viruses. Biogeochemical cycles: carbon, nitrogen and sulphur. Microorganisms and climate. Marine sediments: structure and formation processes. Marine hydrothermal environments.

Readings/Bibliography

The list of readings will be given for each lecture.

Teaching methods

A 6 credits course, corresponding to 42 hours frontal or on-line lectures, depending on the Covid-19 pandemic.,
