Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student learns the outlines and gains important insights into the history and historiography of music of the eighteenth century; he/she also acquires the methodological tools to orient him/herself in the subject.
Course contents
The course will examine Beethoven's piano sonatas up to Op. 13, exploring their connections with other 19th-century sonatas and with the historical, social and editorial context.

Teaching methods
Listening lectures and analysis of Beethoven's early sonatas, discussions with the class-group.
Assessment methods
The exam consists of an oral examination.
It will be assessed as excellent the performance of those students achieving an organic vision of the course contents, the use of a proper specific language, the originality of the reflection as well as the familiarity with the tools for analysing Beethoven's early sonatas. It will be assessed as discrete the performance of those students showing mostly mechanical or mnemonic knowledge of the subject, not articulated synthesis and analysis capabilities, a correct but not always appropriate language, as well as a scholastic study of the strategies for analysing Beethoven's early sonatas. It will be assessed as barely sufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, lack of knowledge of the strategies for analysing Beethoven's early sonatas. It will be assessed as insufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, no orientation within the recommended bibliography and inability to analyse Beethoven's early sonatas.
