By the end of the laboratory the student: acquires knowledge on the empirical dynamics and the material components of modern contemporary dramaturgy; knows how to analyze the transitions between literary text and scenic text; knows how to apply basic skills to identify the conditions, tools and objectives of dramaturgical practice; knows how to relate the different dramaturgical practices, recognizing their theoretical components and cultural references.

Course contents

The workshop aims to teach students how to critically analyse a dramatic text. After some preliminary lessons on methodology and an introduction to the theme of travel, participants will examine a drama linked to the theme of travel, understood in a physical, inner or metaphorical sense. For example, they will be able to try their hand at analysing Sophocles' Oedipus Rex or Oedipus at Colonus, Shakespeare's The Tempest, Alfieri's Mirra, Byron's Manfred, Kleist's Catherine of Heilbronn, Pirandello's The Giants of the Mountain, Brecht's The Life of Galileo, etc.

Once they have explored the theme of the quest in depth, the students, guided by a professional playwright, will also try their hand at writing a short dramatic text on the theme of travel.

Any administrative, technical-practical and organizational requests must be forwarded exclusively to the teaching tutor of the course, Dr. Marco Argentina, at the following email address: marco.argentina2@unibo.it.

    Teaching methods

The workshop involves reading the chosen dramatic text, identifying critical literature on this text, studying the selected bibliography, developing critical thinking and, finally, creating a written piece based on the reflections conceived.

The workshop activities will be introduced by theoretical and methodological lectures. If the theatre season in Bologna allows, participants will also attend rehearsals and/or performances.

Finally, part of the workshop will consist of writing a short dramatic text on the theme of travel, led by a professional playwright.

    Assessment methods

The level of knowledge acquisition will be assessed through an oral interview focusing on the presentation of the critical-theoretical paper produced during the course, as well as on knowledge of the contents of the exam bibliography.

The achievement of a comprehensive understanding of the analysed dramatic text, mastery of expression and specific language, originality of thought, and familiarity with the tools of dramatic analysis will be assessed with marks of excellence. A lack of articulation in synthesis and analysis or correct but not always appropriate language will lead to moderate grades. Poor synthesis and analysis skills and inappropriate language will lead to grades that are just above the pass mark. Inappropriate language and an inability to analyse the dramaturgical text will inevitably be assessed negatively.
