Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student: learns the historical coordinates for the study of literature; knows the techniques of textual analysis; acquires a sure competence in writing and the ability to read in depth some fundamental works of our literary tradition.

Course contents

LITERATURE, TRAVELS AND TRAVELERS

PART A. (15 lessons): The first part of the course will focus on reading and commenting on exemplary texts of Italian literature, which will allow us to outline the indicated path. The lessons will start from Petrarca and arrive at Ungaretti.

PART B. (15 lessons): During the lessons of Module B – under the title "Cercasi Italia" (Seeking Italy) – the following readings will be covered:

Giulio Bollati, L’italiano. Il carattere nazionale come storia e come invenzione (only the essay L’italiano, available on Virtuale);

Leo Longanesi, Parliamo dell’Elefante;

Mario Soldati, Fuga in Italia;

Riccardo Bacchelli, America in confidenza (the texts, as in the case of Bollati’s essay, will be made available to students on Virtuale);

Leonardo Sciascia, Candido ovvero un sogno fatto in Sicilia (current editions published by Adelphi).

The lessons of part A will be given by Prof. Giacomo Ventura, the lessons of part B will be given by Prof. Marco Veglia.

Teaching methods

Lecture with the aid of educational and audiovisual materials that will be made available to students.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an oral test.

The oral test covers both Part A and Part B.

Erasmus students or those from other international exchange programs will have the opportunity to arrange a customized program.

Students with DSA (Specific Learning Disabilities) or temporary or permanent disabilities: It is recommended that students contact the responsible university office in advance (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it ). The office will propose any adjustments for interested students, which must be submitted for the professor’s approval at least 15 days in advance.
