35425 - Bioimaging and Clinical Engineering M

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Moduli: Cristiana Corsi (Modulo 1) Eugenio Ricci (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Electronic Engineering (cod. 6716)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the main equipment in a healthcare facility. He/she knows the regulations for the certification of medical devices and for their correct and safe handling. He/she has also developed the ability to understand the technical and functional specifications of systems and methods used in the medical field for prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation, aimed at the planning of health services.

Course contents

The course is composed by two modules including the following topics:

Diagnostic systems. Physical principles and technological features of the following diagnostic systems: electrocardiography, monitoring systems, x-ray, computed tomography, echography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, radiotherapy systems.

Medical devices. Definition and current regulations, classification and certification process of medical devices. Coding systems for biomedical technologies. Data on medical device availability and use.

Clinical engineering. Definition and roles, activities and competences. Management and evaluation of technologies in healthcare facilities, including HTA approaches. Acquisition and maintenance of medical devices. Criteria for the dimensioning of a clinical engineering service. Regulations for ensuring the correct and safe use of biomedical technologies. Electrical safety of medical equipment and systems,

Seminar lectures will be given on specific topics by experts in the field.

Teaching methods

Frontal lectures in which portable diagnostic systems will be shown to the students.

During the course, several visits to hospital labs, radiology and clinical engineering departments are also included.

Assessment methods

During the course anonymous questionnaires will be administered through web applications to monitor the level of comprehension of the contents in real time and eventually carry out re-modulations.

The final exam consists in an oral test at the end of the course, aimed at the evaluation of their technical knowledge of the course contents. The student's ability to illustrate the contents covered during the course, also performing comparative evaluations between the different methodologies will be evaluated as well as the capability to solve problems related to health technology assessment. Language skills, clarity of presentation, level of detail will be an integral part of the evaluation.

The final grade is given in /30.

For students with DSA or temporary or permanent disabilities: it is recommended to contact the University office in advance (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it): it will be the responsibility of the office to propose any adaptations to the students concerned, which must in any case be submitted, 15 days in advance, for the approval of the teacher, who will also assess their appropriateness in relation to the educational objectives of the teaching.
