37223 - Internal Medicine I (C)

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5904)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be familiar with the general principles of pathophysiology as they pertain to the interpretation needs of future clinical practice. In particular, knowledge of these principles allows for a comprehensive understanding of the elements underlying the impaired functioning of organs and systems, from which both semiological and clinical aspects derive.

Furthermore, the student will be able to correctly approach the patient from a clinical perspective, particularly with regard to the physical examination, demonstrating the ability to independently assess different organ systems in relation to the knowledge of investigative procedures characteristic of clinical methodology.

The integration of knowledge in clinical pathophysiology and semeiotics enables the student to understand and address the fundamental bases of diseases, serving as preparatory training for the subsequent development of their course of study.

Course contents

During the “Laboratory” sessions of Medical Semiotics, students will acquire the theoretical and practical foundations for conducting the medical history (anamnesis) and the physical examination. The fundamental steps of the patient’s physical examination will be illustrated and then applied to the different organs and systems.

A specific module will also be dedicated to doctor–patient communication, with particular focus on challenging interactions and the delivery of bad news.
