Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student has the ability to apply knowledge and understanding in relation to basic care practice in the medical-surgical area.

Course contents

Health needs, nursing theories, and care models

Assessment of health and illness: Data collection, physical examination, observation, and inspection.

The chain of infection transmission: main diseases, routes of spread, precautions to implement, and PPE.

Vital signs measurement, pain monitoring, and blood glucose monitoring.

Preparation and administration of therapy: routes of administration and proper use of medical devices.

Administration of blood components

Clinical documentation and information handover

Intestinal stomas and urostomy

Drainage systems and management

Teaching methods

Lecture, laboratory activities, group work, demonstration of equipment and recording tools

Assessment methods

Learning assessment takes place through a final exam that verifies the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills in patient care through an oral and practical test, which includes 2 theoretical questions on the main topics covered during the lessons, and the execution of one of the techniques practiced during the practical exercises.
The test will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- knowledge, mastery, and in-depth understanding of the content
- correct execution of practical techniques according to the guidelines
