Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have acquired a solid understanding of epidemiology as it applies to public health, health determinants, the prevention of infectious and chronic degenerative diseases, environmental and food hygiene, and hospital hygiene.
Course contents
Fundamentals of Epidemiology
Characteristics of observational epidemiological studies (ecological, cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies) and experimental studies (randomized clinical trials)
Concepts of bias and confounding
Epidemiological measures
Absolute risk and relative risk: importance for clinical and public health decision-making
The three steps of epidemiology
Statistical inference, confidence intervals
Significance: statistical versus clinical
Identification of scientific evidence and the importance of the epidemiological method for research and healthcare organization
Tools of Evidence-Based Medicine: reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, guidelines, and diagnostic-therapeutic protocols
