Learning outcomes

Students have acquired the main techniques of conference interpreting (simultaneous and consecutive interpreting) from Italian into French to use in different professional settings.

Course contents

The course is aimed at strengthening the skills acquired during the first year and will be focusing on:

  • Further development of analytical and processing skills necessary to grasp the main concepts of a speech, memorize them and provide a properly articulated rendition.
  • Professional delivery: consistency, precision and completeness; prosody, posture and gaze, proper intonation and diaphasic variations, as well as appropriate choice of register and terminology, depending on the type of speech used.

  • Simultaneous and consecutive interpretation in specialty fields with texts taken from political, business and technical-scientific conferences.

    Constructive and targeted feedback depending on the type of problems encountered and tips/strategies to fix them or highlighting of noteworthy solutions adopted by the students surveyed, as well as direct involvement of them and others for constructive self-criticism and appropriate strategy-finding.

  • Interpreter’s accurate preparation (ad hoc terminology search, specialized glossary drafting, and the ‘must-have’ texts and documents, body language and dress code)
  • Collaboration with colleagues and deontological ethics of interpreters.

In addition to the topics suggested by the teacher, some topics have been decided upon by all interpreting courses: social area, environment, political-historical area, economics/finance, energy, technology and scientific developments.

Teaching methods

Simultaneous and consecutive interpreting exercises with texts taken from real conferences on different topics (social-political issues, business and finance, technical and industry- related matters) and of increasing difficulty (speed of speech, technical terms, density of concepts, interviews or round tables with multiple speakers). Possible recording of students' performances for detailed feedback, discussion and self-assessment.

Assessment methods

The assessment of the Interpreting from Italian into French II module will be held in presence.

Students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) or with disabilities that can affect their ability to attend courses are invited to contact the University service for students with disabilities and SLDat the earliest opportunity -- ideally before the start of the course: https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students. The University service will suggest possible adjustments to the course work and/or exam, which must then be submitted to the course leader so they can assess their feasibility, in line with the learning objectives of the course. Please note that adjustments to the exam must be requested at least two weeks in advance.

Students are assessed throughout the year as they receive timely feedback on every assignment

The exam will consist in a consecutive interpretation test of about 7 minutes and a simultaneous interpretation test of about 12 minutes on topics dealt with during the course.

Students will have to demonstrate a full mastery of the simultaneous and consecutive interpretation strategies and of the active language.

The test aims at assessing the candidate’s delivery, which must be intelligible even when listening to it only - regardless of the source text.

Consistency, plausibility, completeness, prosody and pace of speaking will also be assessed. The vocabulary chosen will have to be in line with the speaker’s register and the interpretation must accurately render the original ideas/information of the speech.

The candidate must also prove full knowledge of the active language (correct grammar, terminology, syntax, idiomatic expressions, etc.).

The time of delivery in consecutive interpretation should not be longer than the original speech.

For the integrated course, which includes the module of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from Italian into French and the module of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation from French into Italian (held by Prof. Baldi), the tests for both modules are taken during the same exam session. The candidate should take the interpretation tests included in the exam. If he/she passes at least 50% of the tests (at least 2 tests for language A and at least 1 test for language B), the passed tests shall not be repeated in future exam sessions. The overall mark for the whole integrated course is calculated by averaging the marks obtained in the single tests scheduled for the various modules of the integrated course.

Students are graded using the following marking scheme:

Unsatisfactory

Inadequate contents different from source text, omissions of elements key to comprehension, calques and/or distortions, counter-sense, mistakes in target language grammar/syntax, pronunciation, poor word choice and disfluencies that affect comprehension.

Satisfactory(18 – 20)

Content inaccuracies and omissions; full pauses, inaccuracies in register; minor mistakes in grammar/syntax; mistakes in target language grammar/pronunciation and disfluencies that partially hinder comprehension.

Fairly good(21 – 24)

Adequate contents with very few full pauses, generalizations, additions and/or omissions; minor mistakes in pronunciation, grammar, syntax and register which do not affect comprehension of target language.

Good(25-27)

Good rendering of the source language text with few inaccuracies; adequate prosody, pauses and good use of voice; grammar/syntax, lexicon and register of target language are appropriate. No calques, distortions or other errors which may affect comprehension.

Excellent (28-30L)

Very accurate, consistent and complete rendering; very good delivery; perfect use of prosody, pauses and voice; correct grammar and syntax in target language; appropriate lexicon and register, with only few local inaccuracies. No disfluencies or major mistakes.

If a student is not happy with her/his marks, s/he may re-sit the whole exam or one of its modules.

The three modules are:interpreting Italian into French (two tests: one consecutive and one simultaneous), interpreting French into Italian (one test, either simultaneous or consecutive interpreting), and Dialogue, Multimodal and Distance Interpreting (one test: either consecutive or simultaneous interpreting).

E.g., if you choose to reject your mark for the module “Interpreting Italian into French” you will have to re-sit both parts of the exam for that module: i.e., consecutive and simultaneous interpreting from Italian into French. You cannot re-sit just one of them.
