Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Moduli: Vincenzo Russo (Modulo 1) Caterina Gaudiano (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 1); In-person learning (entirely or partially) (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Imaging and Radiotherapy techniques (cod. 6063)

Learning outcomes

The student acquires the skills for MR anatomy of MR protocols concerning the thorax, upper and lower abdomen and the cardiovascular and cardiac system

Course contents

Module 1 – Lecturer: Vincenzo Russo

This module is focused on the study of cardiovascular anatomy using magnetic resonance imaging, with particular reference to clinical-diagnostic applications and to the professional role of the Radiologic Technologist.

The contents include:
- MRI anatomy of the heart and major vessels;
- MRI anatomy of the thorax with a focus on cardiovascular structures;
- main MRI sequences used in cardiac imaging;
- cardiovascular MRI examination protocol: patient preparation, planning and image acquisition;
- recognition of normal anatomy and main anatomical variants;
- introduction to the main cardiovascular pathological findings detectable with MRI.

Module 2 – Lecturer: Caterina Gaudiano

This module provides an in-depth overview of body MRI anatomy, with reference to the thorax and abdomen, integrating cardiovascular knowledge with a systemic and application-oriented perspective.

The contents include:
- MRI anatomy of the thorax and abdomen with clinical correlations;
- analysis of extracardiac anatomical structures relevant in body MRI;
- integration of anatomy, acquisition techniques and diagnostic objectives;
- optimization of MRI protocols according to different anatomical regions;
- discussion of representative clinical cases.

Teaching methods

Module 1 – Vincenzo Russo

Teaching activities consist of face-to-face lectures supported by multimedia presentations, MRI images and guided analysis of anatomical images and clinical cases.

Module 2 – Caterina Gaudiano

The module includes face-to-face lectures, use of digital teaching materials, guided discussion of clinical cases and image analysis focused on the correlation between anatomy, technique and diagnostic interpretation.

Assessment methods

Module 1 – Vincenzo Russo

Learning assessment is carried out through a written examination based on the identification of anatomical structures on MRI images and theoretical questions related to cardiovascular anatomy and MRI acquisition techniques, with possible oral integration.

Module 2 – Caterina Gaudiano

Assessment includes a written examination with theoretical questions and body MRI images to be interpreted, and a possible oral examination aimed at verifying integrated understanding of body MRI anatomy and technical applications.

Teaching tools

“Students with learning disorders and/or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students ) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.”
