58100 - Laboratory of Unit Operations in the Chemical Industry

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical methodologies for products and processes (cod. 6006)

Learning outcomes

The laboratory activity will be aimed at applying material and energy balances to evaluate the effects of variations in the feed and operating conditions of the plants. The student will thus be able to ensure a correct interpretation of operational variations and identify possible corrective actions.

Course contents

Exercises on material and enthalpy balances in systems operating at steady state. Numerical resolution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.

Exercises on convective/conductive heat exchange mechanisms. Numerical resolution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.

Exercises on fluid motion, measurement and calculation of head losses. Numerical resolution using spreadsheets and comparison with experimental data collected during laboratory sessions.

Teaching methods

The practical exercises will be conducted in the laboratory, and the analysis of the acquired data will be discussed in the classroom according to the official schedule.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning is done through a presentation of the results at the end of the laboratory experiments via an oral presentation of the findings.

Teaching tools

The educational material useful for exam preparation is made available to students in electronic format via the internet. To access the educational material, students need to connect to the website: https://virtuale.unibo.it/ . The username and password are reserved for students enrolled at the University of Bologna and will be provided by the instructor.

Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students ) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
