Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the structure and functioning of financial systems and their role in the economy. They will be able to explain the principles of financial intermediation and the role of financial institutions, analyse the causes and consequences of financial crises, and evaluate the management, structure, and regulation of major financial institutions. Students will also be able to apply concepts of interest rates, risk management, and monetary policy in practical contexts, and describe the main financial markets, the instruments traded, and assess market efficiency.

Course contents

The course provides an introduction to the functioning of financial systems, understood as the combination of intermediaries and financial markets, and their role in the real economy. The first part examines the reasons for the existence of financial systems and their key functions. This is followed by the fundamental principles of financial intermediation, with particular emphasis on the role of institutions, their significance relative to markets, and the causes and effects of financial crises. A central section is devoted to the main financial institutions—banks, mutual funds, insurance companies, investment banks, brokers, and venture capital firms—focusing on management, industry structure, and regulation. The course also covers bank management, interest rates, and risk management, the role of central banks and monetary policy, and concludes with an analysis of financial markets, the main instruments traded, and market efficiency.
