Learning outcomes

Basic notions for the teaching of English in an Italian primary school setting

Course contents

This optional course, held in English,  offers an extremely practcal introduction to the essential techniques needed to teach English in a primary school context. The course will look at objectives and the relevant methodology providing many practical examples,  with particular reference to  skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing, lexical and structural development  we will examine  practical play-based activities that can help children learn and reinforce new language. We will also be looking at that approaches such as the use of storytelling, songs and chants, nursery rhymes, "arts and crafts" and drama.

Above all the course sets out to provide a series of activities that teacher can directly apply in the classroom- enjoyable basic activities to help teachers with their first steps in their new career.

The programme for students who do not attend  lessons consists of a thorough reading of the four texts listed in the next section " Readings/Biliography

Teaching methods

Workshop. presentaion of teaching activities followed by discussion/analysis of various practical activities.

Assessment methods

The final exam of the course consists of the presentation and  discussion of a lesson plan for a typical primary/infants  school lesson  which reflects the activity types and techniques that have been met during the course.

For students  who do not attend lessons  the exam format remains the same  but in addition to the creation and presentation of the lesson plan  the exam also consists of a thorough study and  discussion of the contents of the four books indicated in the  readings/bibliography  section

As well as the  knowledge of the contents  the student will be evaulated on their oral competences.

Students will provide a self certification  declaring whether they  "frequenters" or are "non attenders"

In order to take the final exam students should enrol on Alma Esami within the prescibed deadline. Anyone who is unable to enrol due to technical difficuties before the prescribed date should communicate the probem to the "segretaria didattica" as soon as possible, before the closing date for enrolments. It will be up to the course lecturer to accept the enrollment. If you fail the exam it is possibe to try again in the same exam session should there be another available date.
