Course contents

The Psychology Laboratory is designed to complement the topics covered in the General Psychology course.

The following subjects will be explored in depth through the presentation, discussion, and synthesis of scientific articles, as well as through exercises aimed at increasing students’ awareness:

  • Research methodology in psychology: the emergence of neuroscience and the importance of studying clinical cases; techniques for in vivo brain study; peripheral and central indices.

  • Physiological and pathological states of consciousness; the sleep-wake cycle; different stages of sleep and their functions; sleep disorders; vegetative state.

  • Neurophysiological bases of the emotional response.

  • Healthcare communication and therapeutic adherence; elements of nonverbal communication; facial perception.

Readings/Bibliography

Materials provided during the lectures.

The following textbook is recommended for those who wish to further deepen the topics covered; however, it is not mandatory for obtaining eligibility, which will be assessed solely based on active participation and completion of the activities proposed in class.

1. Feldman R.S., PSICOLOGIA GENERALE. McGraw-Hill. Psicologia generale. La scienza della mente e del pensiero (a cura di T. Marzi A. Peru, R. Merlini (Traduttore), L. Tasso (Traduttore). Ed McGraw Hill

Teaching methods

Presentation and discussion of videos featuring clinical cases that have been particularly important in the field of neuropsychology.

Conducting practical exercises in class related, for example, to the psychological well-being, biases in healthcare delivery, and other topics covered during the lectures.

Assessment methods

The Laboratory in General Psychology provides a pass, which is necessary for the formal recording of the General Psychology exam grade (the grade will be the one obtained in the General Psychology exam, taught by Prof. Maria Ida Gobbini).

To obtain eligibility for the Laboratory, students must participate in the practical exercises proposed in class by the instructor.

If students are unable to attend the exercises, in order to obtain eligibility they must submit to the instructor a critical commentary on one of the articles that will be communicated during the laboratory sessions and uploaded on the online platform. These articles will cover topics related to the course.

Specifically, the commentary must include a brief summary of the research presented in the article, the strengths and limitations of the methodology used, and the practical/care-related implications of the results.

Examples of the format to be used will be provided during the lessons and uploaded to the online platform.

Teaching tools

Use of videos featuring patients with neurological disorders to illustrate the importance of studying lesions within the neurophysiological context.

In-class discussions on specific topics assigned by the instructor.

In class, hands on practical exercises.
