Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will have a good understanding of research methodology and will be able to identify specific areas for intervention.
Course contents
The course introduces the methodological principles of research and the main types of studies found in the literature that are relevant to nursing.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- understand the principles of research methodology;
- define the meaning of scientific research in the nursing field;
- describe the characteristics of the main study designs: descriptive, observational and experimental;
- understand the evidence from primary literature, in particular treatment, aetiological, prognostic and diagnostic studies, for the improvement of clinical nursing practice.
Syllabus
- Definition of scientific research.
- Research methodology: objectives, research questions, hypotheses and variables.
- The main research designs and the fundamentals of the research protocol.
- Characteristics of primary literature studies: observational (etiological and prognostic); experimental (RCT); diagnostic.
- An introduction to the critical appraisal of primary literature.

Teaching methods
Lecture and group work followed by a whole-class discussion.
Assessment methods
The final overall assessment for the course will consist of an oral examination comprising two open-ended questions, which will be marked on the basis of the level of learning demonstrated and the appropriateness of the content presented
- 30 with distinction: excellent reasoning and flawless presentation
- 24 to 30: comprehensive reasoning and correct presentation
- 18 to 23: adequate reasoning and somewhat uncertain presentation
To be eligible for the examination, students must have attended at least 66% of the integrated course lectures.
If the student has participated in the TBL (team-based learning) session, they will receive one point or a fraction of a point (proportionally) based on their score
