08115 - Fruit Species Arboriculture

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Marketing and Economics of the Agro-Industrial System (cod. 5833)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate a foundational understanding of the mechanisms governing the transmission of traits and apply appropriate methodological tools to evaluate the genetic structure of natural and artificial plant communities

Course contents

Prerequisites
Students enrolling in this course are expected to have a solid background in the fundamentals of plant biology, plant physiology, and general arboriculture.

Course Content
For the degree program in Economics and Marketing in the Agro-Industrial System, the course covers the following fruit species: kiwifruit, citrus, apricot, cherry, strawberry, apple, walnut and other nut crops, olive, pear, peach, plum, and table grape.

Within this program, for all the species listed above, the course will specifically address:

  • botanical classification,

  • physiological aspects,

  • organography,

  • evolution of varietal standards,

  • and economic relevance.

Assessment
The evaluation of learning outcomes will focus exclusively on these aspects as applied to the species under study.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will acquire knowledge concerning botanical classification, organography, and main physiological characteristics of the species considered, as well as the maturation calendar and descriptions of the principal cultivars. In addition, students will gain an understanding of economic and statistical aspects, with particular emphasis on their relevance to the objectives of the degree program in Economics and Marketing in the Agro-Industrial System.

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching Materials
Lecture materials in PDF format are made available by the instructor through the university platform. Access to these materials is restricted to enrolled students and is managed according to the procedures established by the University.

Additional resources such as articles, presentations, and other reference materials are also provided through the same platform.

For certain parts of the course, students may consult the following texts; however, these resources alone are not sufficient to prepare for the final examination:

  • Arboricoltura Speciale, edited by A. Gentile, P. Inglese, M. Tagliavini, Edagricole, Bologna.

  • Rivista di Frutticoltura e di Ortofloricoltura, Edagricole.

Teaching methods

Teaching Methods

  • Lectures: Through the various instructional units delivered in the classroom, students acquire the knowledge necessary to understand the mechanisms regulating vegetative and productive development in different fruit tree species, and how to optimize their productivity year after year.

  • Practical Exercises: Field exercises are organized in the experimental orchards of the Tree Crops Operational Unit at the University of Bologna Agricultural Company (AUB).

Assessment methods

Examination

The exam is conducted orally and is held in conjunction with the Integrated Course in Herbaceous Crops.

The dates of the individual exam sessions are announced at the beginning or during the course and are scheduled through the University’s AlmaEsami platform.

As this is an Integrated Course, the recording of exam results is always carried out by Professor Walter Zegada Lizarazu.
