Learning outcomes

At the end of the learning module the student will understand: the processes of the normal pregnancy and parturition; the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the most common maternal and fetal complications; the biological basis of normal reproduction and its most common abnormalities; the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the most frequent diseases involving the female genital tract; the etiopathogenesis of genital tract neoplasms, and the principles of prevention, diagnosis and treatment

Course contents

Principles of human embryology and teratogenesis. Maternal adaptations in pregnancy. Principles of antenatal care, obstetric ultrasound, drugs in pregnancy and lactation. labor and delivery. Obstetric surgery. Congental anomalies: impact, diagnosis, screening. Infections in pregnancy. Miscarriage and trophoblastic disease. Ectopic pregnancy. Anti-erythocyte alloimmunizations. Placenta previa and placental abruption. Premature delivery. Hypertension in pregnancy. fetal growth restriction. Diabetes in pregnancy. Multiple gestations. Maternal diseases in pregnancy. From symptoms to diagnosis of the most common obstetric complications. Reproductive axis and female gonadal function regulation throughout life. The normal and abnormal menstrual cycle. Hyperandrogenism and PCOS. Pathophysiology and clinic of menopause. Contraception. Endometriosis and female chronic pelvic pain. Infertility and sterility. Assisted reproduction. Pelvic inflammatory disease and sexually transmitted genital infections. Benign gynecological diseases. Endometrial tumors and endometrial carcinoma. Cervical diseases and cervical carcinoma. Ovarian neoplasms. Genital prolapse. Female urinary incontinence. New surgical techniques and minimally invasive surgery in gynecology.

Assessment methods

The end-of-course exam aims to assess the achievement of the learning objectives by assessing the student's ability to apply their knowledge and make the necessary logical-deductive connections.

The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the syllabus topics.

Final grade grading:

Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course and analytical ability that emerges only with the instructor's assistance, using generally correct language → 18-19;
Preparation on a limited number of topics covered in the course and independent analysis ability only on purely executive questions, using correct language → 20-24;
Preparation on a large number of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent critical analysis choices, mastery of specific terminology → 25-29;
Substantially exhaustive preparation on the topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis and connection, full mastery of specific terminology and ability to argue and self-reflect → 30-30L.
