Learning outcomes
Identify the histopathology of cancerous and precancerous lesions through slide review.
Course contents
The laboratory is based on the review of digital histological macrosections and regular section slides stained with hematoxylin and eosin, on the SmartZoom platform.
First there will be an introductory lecture on the criteria and the nomenclature for pre-cancerous lesions, cancer grading and staging.
Then the professor and the students will analyze interactively digitalized slides for anatomical and histological characteristics typical of normal, pre-cancer and cancer features, including criteria for grading and staging cancer.
The tumors will include:
- Colorectal cancer and pre-cancer lesions (polyps)
- Breast cancer and pre-cancer lesions
- Nevi and melanoma
- Lung cancer and pre-cancer lesions (squamous and glandular)
- Prostate cancer and pre-cancer lesions
- Pancreatic cancer and pre-cancer lesions
- Bladder cancer and pre-cancer lesions
- Endometrial cancer and pre-cancer lesions
Teaching methods
Interactive review of histological cancer digital slides using the SmartZoom platform.
Assessment methods
At the end of each class the students will be allowed to independently review the digital slides previously seen in the class with annotations using an option on the SmartZoom platform.
At the end of the course the professor will submit the students a final evaluation test based on 10 multiple choice questions on the digitalized images seen in the class.
The students will earn 3 votes for each question. At least 6 correct questions are required to pass the test.
The final vote will be integrated with those of the other modules of the integrated course.
